Acoustical systems: analogies | Part 2: equivalent circuits

Small tube opening into a large tube

We consider here the case of a small tube opening into a large duct.

The examination of the the first element shows that it opens into a larger cross section. In this case, and at low frequencies, the air in this element can oscillate without compression. The system (small tube) is equivalent to a tube which opens into infinite space. It is thus an acoustic mass.
