Part 4.2: Elementary acoustic loads of a loudspeaker

Effect of the enclosure (1)

Rear surface of a loudspeaker radiates into a resonant system which presents:

  • compliance due to the compressibility of the air inside a volume,

  • acoustic mass due to the inertia of the air in a vent. The term represents a length correction due to the discontinuity effects at the input and at the ouput of a vent. Radiation resistance is neglected here.

  • resistance Raf  which represents the losses inside the enclosure (often neglected). This resistance determines a quality factor of the system (often between 5 and 10 for a neat enclosure).
